Federal Tax Return
Starting atIf you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, your worldwide income is generally subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you are living. Also, you are subject to the same income tax filing requirements that apply to U.S. citizens or resident aliens living in the United States.
Form 8938 – Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets
If you are a taxpayer living abroad you must file if:
- • You are filing a return other than a joint return and the total value of your specified foreign assets is more than $200,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $300,000 at any time during the year; or
- • You are filing a joint return and the value of your specified foreign asset is more than $400,000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $600,000 at any time during the year.
State Tax Return
- Some states require you to file a tax return.
Foreign Bank Accounts Report (FBAR)
- Per the Bank Secrecy Act, every year you must report certain foreign financial accounts, such as bank accounts, brokerage accounts and mutual funds, to the Treasury Department. You must file the FBAR if the aggregate maximum value of all your foreign financial accounts exceeds the equivalent of $10,000.

Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return
Starting at- If you are any of the following, you must file a return:
- • A nonresident alien individual engaged or considered to be engaged in a trade or business in the United States during the year.
- • A nonresident alien individual who is not engaged in a trade or business in the United States and has U.S. income on which the tax liability was not satisfied by the withholding of tax at the source.
